Mariners sign KBO 35-HR slugger who played 5 seasons for Cubs image

The Seattle Mariners entered the offseason with an opening at third base, vacated by free agent Eugenio Suarez.

A number of options have been floated as the guy who could fill that, but no one brought up the player that Seattle signed on Wednesday.

The new signing is Patrick Wisdom, in a deal reported by Aram Leighton.

Wisdom played last season in Korea's KBO, and he slugged 35 home runs.

Before that, he played parts of seven seasons in MLB.

He broke in with the St. Louis Cardinals with 32 games in 2018. He then played nine games for the Texas Rangers the following year, and just two games for the Cubs in 2020.

But then for four years, Wisdom was a reliable part-time player for Chicago.

In his MLB career, Wisdom has a.750 OPS that includes 58 doubles and 88 home runs.

He's not a high-average hitter (.209 career), but when he hits the ball, he hits it hard and does damage.

Wisdom played mostly third base in 2023 with the Cubs, then he played majority first base in 2024.

Seattle has first base held down by Josh Naylor, so if Wisdom wants to make the MLB roster, he'll have to prove he can get the job done at third base.

It's certainly a low-risk opportunity for the Mariners to add a talented player with the chance to impact their MLB team in 2026.
