The Seattle Mariners suffered a huge loss when Jorge Polanco signed with the New York Mets yesterday, and now they need to find a replacement. Luckily, there’s a player they can easily obtain who would be an amazing replacement.
That player is St. Louis Cardinals All-Star and Gold Glove second baseman Brendan Donovan. Fansided’s Christopher Kline believes the Mariners are the best suitor for him and have the assets to get him.
“New Cardinals GM Chaim Bloom needs to dial up the Mariners, who boast the deepest reservoir of high-level pitching prospects in MLB. The M's need a potential Jorge Polanco replacement and would benefit from Donovan's ability to flex to the outfield. St. Louis needs a major influx of rotation-level talent. It's a match made in heaven,” Kline wrote.
This past season, Donovan slashed.287/.353/.422/.775 with 32 doubles, 10 home runs, and 50 RBI in 118 games played. While he doesn’t have Polanco's power or switch-hitting ability, his contact and defensive abilities more than make up for it.
Donovan also has the perk of being a utility man; he can play almost anywhere. So, if they need to move him due to an injury from another player, his bat can stay in the lineup, and his glove can easily cover that new area.
If Seattle is smart, they’ll get to dialing ASAP. Donovan will be a hot commodity, as his versatility is known by every contender looking for an upgrade for their roster.
