The Seattle Mariners were one win away from their first World Series appearance, but they came up short and lost, 4-3. Now, they need to decide how to upgrade their roster for next season to stay a contender.
MLB Trade Rumors’ Steve Adams believes that, with the possibility of losing Jorge Polanco and the fact that the Mariners need to scale back strikeouts, they should trade for St. Louis Cardinals All-Star Brendan Donovan.
“That high-contact approach, affordable salary and defensive versatility make Donovan a natural fit on virtually any contender…The Mariners could lose Jorge Polanco and have long been working to scale back on the strikeouts,” Adams wrote.
This past season, Donovan slashed.287/.353/.422/.775 with 32 doubles, 10 home runs, and 52 RBI in 118 games played. He also got his first All-Star nod this season and got a Gold Glove in his rookie year in 2022.
Donovan would be a great step in lowering strikeouts, as his career K% is only 13.5%, way under the MLB average of 22%. Even if Polanco picks up on his player option, the Mariners should still try and trade for Donovan, as he is a utility man who can basically play anywhere you need him to.
Hopefully, the Mariners get to calling the Cardinals as soon as they can, as many contenders will want the services of Donovan as well.
