Sometimes, social media can be a cool tool.

Like on Tuesday night, when a poster on X revealed an awesome fun fact about the catcher the Seattle Mariners just traded for from the Minnesota Twins, Jhonny Pereda.

Pereda once pitched in the major leagues for the Athletics.

And when Pereda was on the mound, he worked a 2-2 count to Shohei Ohtani, and then he ran an 89 mile per hour fastball up and past a swing-and-a-miss for a strikeout.

You just have to see this. It's awesome:

Pereda came over from the Twins for cash. Hopefully the Mariners threw in just a bit extra for that silly pitching anecdote.

Pereda is a 29-year old catcher who has played in 48 MLB games over the past two seasons. He made his MLB debut for the Miami Marlins in 2024. In 2025, he played for both the Athletics and Twins.

Pereda is 26-for-108 in his major league career, a.241 average. He's originally from Venezuela and was an international signing in 2013 by the Chicago Cubs.

He toiled in the minors for more than 11 years before debuting in April 2024 with Miami.

He has spent times in the organizations of the Cubs, Red Sox, Giants, Reds, Marlins, Athletics and Twins.

In his minor league career, Pereda is a.263 hitter with a.706 OPS.

And yeah, when you're the end of the bench guy, you get put in to pitch on the wrong side of blowouts.

And that can lead to incredible moments like striking out the best baseball player on the planet while not even really being a pitcher yourself.
