The San Francisco Giants have gone all-in in recent seasons, signing infielders like Matt Chapman and Willy Adames to big contracts in free agency.

Additionally, the Giants made one of the most recent blockbuster trades, acquiring Rafael Devers from the Boston Red Sox.

Now, they're rumored to be interested in acquiring even more infield help. According to Derrick Goold of The St. Louis Post-Dispatch, San Francisco is monitoring Brendan Donovan as a trade target.

Donovan had his best season since his rookie campaign last year, earning an All-Star nod after an incredible first half. Unfortunately for Donovan, injuries cut his second half short as he only finished the year with 118 games played. In those games, Donovan hit.287 with 10 home runs, 50 RBI's and 132 hits.

With a crowded infield, placing Donovan at second base (he spent 100 games there in 2025) would be the most sensible fit. That said, Donovan offers plenty of versatility around the diamond. Donovan can play in many positions, having played everywhere in his career excluding only pitcher, catcher and centerfield.

Although San Francisco has expressed interest in the Cardinals' All-Star, he may be tough to acquire. Given his hitting ability, defensive prowess (former Gold Glove winner) and his defensive versatility, there are many clubs after his services. The Mariners, Astros, Guardians, Pirates and Royals have all been linked to Donovan this offseason as well.

With St. Louis in the midst of a rebuild, the Cardinals would likely be after young pitching prospects and/or outfield prospects in return.
