MLB insider reveals why 'darkhorse' Giants are unlikely to sign Kyle Tucker image

The San Francisco Giants are heading into an offseason that could feature a lot of big moves. After a down year in 2025, Buster Posey and the front office want to get back to contention, and adding some big-name free agents would be a good way to do so.

There are plenty of interesting names on the market. Kyle Tucker is the best outfielder available and would be a great addition.

However, according to MLB insider Bob Nightengale of USA Today, there's one main reason why the Giants, despite being a "darkhorse" contender for Tucker in free agency, are not likely to sign the free agent outfielder.

Why the Giants aren't likely to sign Kyle Tucker

"The San Francisco Giants are a darkhorse," Nightengale writes, "but considering they still owe Rafael Devers $250 million, are in the second year of a seven-year, $182 million contract with Willy Adames and the second of a six-year, $151 million extension with Matt Chapman, there's only so many nine-figure contracts the Giants can seemingly afford."

Adding Tucker would be a great move for the Giants, but their huge contracts they've already handed out make signing such a player very difficult for the Giants.

They could try to make it work, but it won't come easily. It's not just Rafael Devers, Willy Adames, or Matt Chapman eating into the money the Giants have at their disposal.

Robbie Ray, Logan Webb, and Jung Hoo Lee are all making a lot of money. Add on the roughly $10 million they've spent on their manager spot for 2025 and beyond, and the Giants don't have a lot of wiggle room this winter.

They could bring in a few lower-money free agents, but signing a player like Tucker, who's likely to sign a deal around $400 million, is very difficult for the Giants.

That's not to say the Giants won't try or won't see if they can make it work. But the restrictions they have to work with will make signing Tucker challenging. They're a dark-horse candidate for a reason, but the odds of Tucker landing in San Francisco seem slim.
