The San Francisco Giants are one club rumored to be in the market for a second baseman.

Manager Tony Vitello will weigh his options during spring training. The second base group includes Tyler Fitzgerald, Christian Koss, and Casey Schmitt. Still, the organization's best bet for more stability at the position may be to acquire a veteran in free agency or trade.

After the New York Mets acquired middle infielder Marcus Semien from the Texas Rangers in exchange for center fielder Brandon Nimmo, ESPN's Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan believe Mets utility man Jeff McNeil is a top 25 trade candidate in Major League Baseball this offseason.

"The acquisition of Marcus Semien took away McNeil's at-bats at second base, and he's not a great defensive outfielder, which, for a team looking to shore up its fielding, is suboptimal," the ESPN duo wrote. "The expectation, then, is that McNeil will be dealt, even if New York needs to eat some of his $15.75 million deal (with a $2 million buyout on an option for 2027)."

Giants listed as a trade destination for McNeil

McDaniel and Passan listed the Giants, as well as the Pittsburgh Pirates and Kansas City Royals, as potential suitors for McNeil.

McNeil has never duplicated his 2019 All-Star season, when he hit 23 home runs with a.916 OPS, but in 2025, he posted his highest OPS (.746) since he won the National League Batting title in 2022, finishing that season with a.326 average.

He turns 34 in April and can be a mentor to the younger guys in the Giants' infield mix. McNeil has defensive limitations in the outfield, but still performs relatively well at second base.
