Giants lose 3 big names to free agency image

TL;DR

  • * San Francisco Giants expect most 2025 team back for 2026 season.
  • * Three Giants veterans heading to free agency: Wilmer Flores, Dominic Smith, Justin Verlander.
  • * Justin Verlander, a Hall of Fame pitcher, wants to play in 2026.
  • * Wilmer Flores and Dominic Smith likely will not return to the Giants.

The San Francisco Giants have most of their team set to come back in 2026.

Just three veterans are heading for free agency.

MLB released the list of all the new free agents on Sunday. The season officially ended Saturday night when the Dodgers beat the Blue Jays in the World Series Game 7.

That means players can start working their way to new teams potentially.

The Giants' three free agents announced by MLB:

  • Wilmer Flores
  • Dominic Smith
  • Justin Verlander

Verlander is a future Hall of Fame pitcher. He made it clear he wants to continue to play in 2026.

It's not obvious whether the Giants would bring him back or not, but someone will likely give him a chance.

While Flores was a beloved player for The Giants, his return in 2026 isn't a sensible choice. They've got a lot of corner infielders and DH candidates already.

The same thing will likely mean that Smith leaves, too. He was once a top prospect for the Mets, and he was solid when called upon in San Francisco, but he'll probably need a new home.

The Giants were a bit disappointing in 2025. They'll have most of the same group back in 2026.

It'll be up to them to make some improvements and make a run at the playoffs next time around.
