Justin Verlander can still get the job done.
After the early stages of the season were messy for the San Francisco Giants' legendary right-hander, he has righted the ship in a big way.
On Wednesday, Verlander went seven scoreless innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
He has now allowed one total run across his last four starts.
Verlander is the second pitcher age-42 or over to go four starts while allowing no more than one total run.
The other, according to MLB Network's Sarah Langs: Roger Clemens in 2005.
Verlander turned 42 in February, and his season didn't start great. At one point, his ERA was over 6.00.
Now, that ERA is 3.75 and Verlander is trying to help the Giants make a late push for the NL Wild Card.
Ironically, his gem Wednesday wasn't reward with a win on his own record.
Neither team scored until the 11th inning.
But it ended well for the Giants, who put up five runs in top 11 to pull out a 5-1 win.
Verlander will take it, and so will San Francisco.
There's still work to do to chase down the New York Mets, but they aren't done yet, and that's in large part thanks to Verlander.
