TL;DR
- The San Francisco Giants are moving on from veteran catcher Andrew Knizner after one season.
- Knizner had a strong second half of the 2025 season, hitting .306 with good defense.
- The Giants are making other offseason moves, including a trade for Joey Wiemer.
The San Francisco Giants are going to have a busy winter, and they've already begun making some offseason moves.
San Francisco has seen Buster Posey trade for Joey Wiemer, a former Milwaukee Brewers top prospect, but the team's activity isn't limited to acquisitions.
Veteran catcher Andrew Knizner is being designated for assignment by The Giants after a single season in San Francisco, as reported by Jon Heyman of The New York Post.
The Giants have decided to move on from veteran catcher Andrew Knizner.
"Giants will DFA C Andrew Knizner," Heyman reports. "Above-average framer and defense, hit.306 in the second half with 137 wRC+, and season K rate of 11.4% was by far the best of his career."
The Giants have made a noteworthy choice. As Heyman highlights, Knizner demonstrated a robust performance in the latter half of the 2025 season, achieving the most successful year of his professional tenure.
Knizner played in 33 games for The Giants as their secondary catcher, achieving a.221 batting average and a.598 on-base plus slugging percentage. Although his performance in the latter half of the season was solid, the remainder of his campaign was not impressive.

San Francisco is cutting ties with Knizner just one year after the veteran joined the organization.
He was with the St. Louis Cardinals from 2019 through 2023, then moved to the Texas Rangers in 2024. His MLB career includes 323 games played, most of which were with The Cardinals.
Currently, the 30-year-old reserve catcher is available to sign with any team and intends to continue his role as a backup catcher. His impressive performance in the latter half of the season might create an opening, though it's improbable he'll return to the Giants, who have already designated him for assignment.
