The San Francisco Giants are coming off yet another season where they finished at.500. They have now hovered around this mark for the last four seasons, and the fan base is starting to make its voice heard.
The club will come into the new season with a new manager, Tony Vitello, and should inspire hope. However, the club is a few pieces away from being considered a contender.
Vitello and the front office will have their work cut out for them over the winter. Trying to keep up with teams like the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers can be quite difficult, but they could help themselves with a few key free agent signings over the winter.
ESPN insider urges the Giants to sign two-time All-Star reliever
The Giants will come into the offseason looking to add some arms. They could use another starting pitcher behind Logan Webb and Robbie Ray, and could use some help in the bullpen.
ESPN's Jeff Passan believes that two-time All-Star Devin Williams could be an excellent fit in San Francisco.
"As many live arms as the Giants have in their bullpen, Randy Rodriguez's Tommy John surgery leaves them thin enough at the back end that prioritizing a dependable ninth-inning option makes sense. And even if the best non-Diaz reliever in free agency struggled at times this past season, his stuff did not tick backward, and the underlying numbers continue to say he's elite. Sign free agent closer Devin Williams."
Passan believes that with Rodriguez out next season, Williams could help stabilize the bullpen and help shut the door in the ninth inning. While he did struggle at times with the New York Yankees this past season, he still possesses the elite talent to miss barrels and contribute to securing wins.
