The San Diego Padres, amid their pursuit to improve the roster and make a deadline splash, have swung the deal of the deadline with the Athletics.

According to ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan, the Padres have made a trade with the Athletics for superstar closer Mason Miller. The Padres are also acquiring starting pitcher J.P. Sears in the deal with the Athletics, and are giving up a huge haul to land both.

This season, Miller has a 3.76 ERA in 38 appearances. He also has 20 saves and 59 strikeouts in 38.1 innings pitched this season.

The 26-year-old had an incredible All-Star season in 2024, sitting at a 2.49 ERA in 65 innings pitched with 104 strikeouts.

He was fourth in AL Rookie of the Year voting and was one of the best relievers in baseball during his breakout 2024 campaign.

According to Passan, the Padres are giving up their top prospect, Leo de Vries, along with three other pitchers, to the Athletics to land Miller and Sears. It's a massive deal that brings one of the most electric closers in baseball to the Padres.

The Padres' landing Miller is a stunning trade, and further strengthens the best bullpen in baseball. But, he's not the only player coming to San Diego. Sears is a starting pitcher with a 4.95 ERA this season and should provide more depth in the rotation for San Diego.

Trading De Vries, their top prospect and the third-ranked prospect in baseball by MLB Pipeline, is a massive trade to make at the deadline for Preller. He's been searching for a blubster, and this deal certainly qualifies for it.

Mason Miller is now a Padres reliever, and Leo De Vries, along with three other pitchers, are heading to the Athletics at the deadline in the blockbuster of the 2025 trade deadline.
