The San Diego Padres had a brutal exit from the playoffs when they lost to the Chicago Cubs. Now, they’ll have to address what went wrong in the offseason, plus what to do with their current roster.
One of those roster problems includes the potential exit of All-Star infielder Luis Arraez. For a replacement, Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller believes the Padres will pursue Detroit Tigers All-Star infielder Gleyber Torres.
“With Luis Arraez on his way out, the Dads need either a first or second baseman to pair with Jake Cronenworth for the foreseeable future. And after five consecutive seasons batting north of .255, Torres isn't the worst option out there for replacing a multiple-time batting champ,” Miller wrote.
This season, Torres finished slashing .256/.358/.387/.745 with 22 doubles, 16 home runs, and 74 RBI in 145 games played. While he doesn’t have the contact ability of Arraez, he makes up for it in power.
Coming off his first All-Star season since his second year in the league, the time to be high on Torres is now. If the Padres want a somewhat equal level replacement, they need to pursue Torres as soon as free agency begins.
Hopefully they do; otherwise, some other contender in need of a second baseman will be all over him.
