The San Diego Padres are entering an offseason that has already been marred with change. Mike Shildt was a surprise retirement, and Craig Stammen was a surprise hiring.
San Diego is also losing Michael King, Robert Suarez, Dylan Cease, and Luis Arraez to free agency. With all of the departures from the club and the looming sale of the team, there are a lot of questions about what the Padres will do this winter.
Unfortunately, Robert Murray of Fansided.com predicts that the Padres, despite having the wheeling and dealing A.J. Preller at the helm, won't be making any big additions this offseason.
Padres get a lackluster offseason update from MLB insider
"You can never rule out anything with the Padres, especially with AJ Preller running the show." Murray writes. "But a major signing would surprise me."
Murray highlights that the Padres need a starting pitcher, with Yu Darvish out for the 2026 season, and the current rotation being a shallower group made up of Joe Musgrove, Nick Pivetta, and Randy Vasquez.
That's not the only area of the roster the Padres need to address. They need to add a first baseman, and also need to consider bullpen additions with Suarez's departure and Jason Adam being uncertain for Opening Day.

"That's a lot of holes to fill," Murray writes, "and the team's uncertain financial future clouds things even further."
San Diego needs to address a few key areas of the roster, but the looming sale of the team makes their upcoming offseason look like a lackluster one.
Murray doesn't expect any big moves, and for a good reason. The Padres aren't likely to make any sweeping changes this winter, as they instead look to be conservative with spending over the 2025-2026 offseason.
