The San Diego Padres are trying to keep pace with the Los Angeles Dodgers to potentially win the NL West. But after a rough last four games, the Padres are six games back of the Dodgers.
Ahead of their series against the Minnesota Twins, the Padres were dealt a blow that could put their chances of surpassing Los Angeles in serious jeopardy.
The Padres announced that shortstop Xander Bogaerts is going on the injured list with a non-displaced fracture in his left foot. Taking his roster spot is infielder Mason McCoy, who was recalled from Triple-A El Paso.
Xander Bogaerts Hits the Injured List
This news is a tough blow for the Padres, as the team is in tight competition with the Dodgers for the National League West. Bogaerts has been one of the best Padres players this season, rebounding from his rough 2024.

In 131 games with the Padres, Bogaerts has a.262 batting average with a .717 OPS and a 98 OPS+. While not the most incredible numbers, his recent production has told a different story.
Since the beginning of June, Bogaerts has had a .755 OPS and has been one of San Diego's top players. In the months prior, he had only a .661 OPS from April until May.
The four-time All-Star and five-time Silver Slugger is now unfortunately expected to miss the rest of the regular season. While he's cooled off a bit as of late, losing Bogaerts for an extended period is a tough blow amid a tight division race.

While he could return for the postseason, and the Padres are likely to make it there, the Padres will still miss their shortstop. Signed through 2033 on a $280 million deal, Bogaerts needs to turn things around to make his deal worth it.
Between his 91 OPS+ 2024 season, his struggles for parts of 2025, and now this injury, it's been a rough first few years of his massive free agent deal.
While Bogaerts works to get back for a postseason run, the Padres will need to push for the NL West without him. A little over a month of 2025 is left, and the Padres will be forced to close out the 2025 regular season without the 32-year-old shortstop.
