After trading Leo De Vries in a deal with the Athletics at the trade deadline a year ago, it wouldn’t make much sense for the San Diego Padres to even entertain trading Mason Miller.
While Miller isn’t the best pitcher the game has ever seen, he’s undoubtedly one of the top closers in baseball.
With his ability to potentially become a starter again one day, it’s tough to justify why the Padres would make that type of move after already committing significant assets to acquire him.
Miller isn’t expensive at this point either.
Regardless, according to the latest from Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, there have been some intriguing talks about the Padres potentially moving on from their lights-out closer, as crazy as it may sound.
“There has also been some intriguing talk about the Padres’ willingness to trade closer Mason Miller, whom San Diego acquired at the Trade Deadline in a megadeal that saw Leo De Vries – the game’s No. 3 prospect per MLB Pipeline – traded to the Athletics,” he wrote.
If the Padres are going to go in one direction, they need to fully commit to it.
Being halfway in and halfway out rarely ends well.
If they want prospects, then go out and get prospects and start rebuilding. If they want to continue trying to win it all with the talent on the current roster, they need to keep building around that group and move forward accordingly.
