Pirates' Paul Skenes trade plans revealed by MLB insider image

The Pittsburgh Pirates have to figure out their future.

There is one thing in no doubt, though: Paul Skenes isn't going anywhere.

His name is thrown around in trade rumors because of how good he is relative to how bad the Pirates are.

But those in the know say Skenes is staying put.

USA Today's Bob Nightengale wrote this on Monday: "The Pirates won’t even listen to trade proposals for Skenes, so don’t bother calling."

This is the logical decision by the Pirates, who certainly wouldn't help themselves get better by trading away the best young pitcher in baseball.

Skenes has a case that he has put together the best two-season start to an MLB pitching career ever.

He's big, strong and durable. He's also got a large following thanks in part to his relationship with social media superstar Livvy Dunne.

Pittsburgh doesn't have guys like Skenes walking through the door in free agency. The Pirates drafted him, a clearly correct choice, and now they've got to keep him around.

Of course, there's so much more to be done here than just deciding not to trade Skenes. Pittsburgh has an entire roster that needs improving.

But the Pirates have one cornerstone in place with Skenes. And no matter how much speculation there is, it doesn't sound like Skenes will be in a different uniform anytime soon.
