Are the Pittsburgh Pirates going to actually spend money?

That's what everyone in baseball is wondering.

The rumors are coming out left and right, connecting the Pirates to this guy and that guy and another guy.

Those free agent rumblings are coming from very reputable reporters, which suggests that there is very real chatter that the Pirates are actually involved.

It would certainly break a pattern of not spending much at all, but it's something that probably needs some evidence to feel real.

The Athletic's Andy McCullough has a suggestion in a new article: The Pirates should sign Eugenio Suarez.

"The Pirates are making noise about wanting to spend," McCullough writes. "Ask anyone within shouting distance of the Monongahela River — actually, ask anyone who knows how to spell “Monongahela” — and they will tell you they will believe it when they see it. But if owner Bob Nutting is serious about authorizing some expenditures to not waste the early prime of Paul Skenes, there are plenty of players available to aid an offense that ranked last in home runs and slugging percentage in 2025. No Pirate hit more than 20 homers last season. Suárez matched a career-best mark with 49 dingers last season and has averaged 32 per year since 2021."

Suarez was red hot to start the 2025 season, hitting 36 of those home runs for the Diamondbacks. Once he was traded to the Mariners, he added just 13 home runs with a much worse overall offensive output.

But he's been one of baseball's more consistent power hitters in recent years, and he's up to 325 career home runs.

The Pirates have an opening at third base, too, after dealing Ke'Bryan Hayes in July.

Suarez would fit, and he'd be pricy but not too pricy. Let's see if the Pirates actually make a move.
