The Pittsburgh Pirates signed a player Thursday with a familiar name.
In fact, he's the son of one former MLB player and the nephew of a Hall of Famer.
The newest member of the Pirates' organization is Wilton Guerrero Jr.
He signed on the first day of MLB's international signing period being open, and it's for a reported $1.95 million, according to MLB.com.
The 16-year old shortstop is ranked the No. 17 player in this international class by MLB.com.
"Wilton Guerrero Sr. Spent eight seasons in the big leagues with four different clubs before becoming a member of MLB’s Trainer Partnership Program at his academy in Nizao, Dominican Republic," it says in MLB.com's scouting report. "His star pupil for the 2026 class is his son, Wilton Jr., who has many of the same key attributes as his father -- a lean, projectable body and a gritty playing style with top-of-the-scale in-game aptitude. Also a nephew of Vladimir Guerrero Sr., Wilton Jr. Has understandably grown up around the game and displays similar tendencies at age 16 to players playing collegiately stateside."

The most notable thing about this Guerrero? His speed.
"Where Guerrero can impact the game most is on the basepaths," MLB.com writes. "He’s been clocked as fast as 4.1 seconds down the first-base line and he’s always apt to go from first to third or second to home when given the opportunity. Those top-tier wheels help his lateral movement at shortstop, where he also displays a quick glove and heady instincts as the captain of the infield. The arm strength won’t blow anyone away but Guerrero’s all-around look is the prototypical 'best athlete on the field' package that clubs often covet in the domestic draft as high up as the early competitive balance round."
The Pirates, who don't shell out a ton of money in MLB free agency, need to get things right in the draft and with their international signings.
It certainly seems like Wilton Guerrero Jr. Could work out nicely.
