The Philadelphia Phillies' largest priority this offseason is re-signing fan favorite designated hitter Kyle Schwarber. Signed back in 2022 for $79 million, the 2025 MVP runner-up is heading towards a massive new deal.

While not many teams have the means to spend so much money, likely well above $120 million total, nor have the roster space for Schwarber, there's one team that's a big concern for the Phillies' chances of bringing Schwarber back this winter.

As MLB.com writer Mark Feinsand mentioned in a recent piece, the Cincinnati Reds would be a great landing spot for Schwarber, as they offer something no other team can. This free agent rumor could spell bad news for the Phillies.

Why Kyle Schwarber's latest free agent rumor spells bad news for Phillies

"Schwarber hails from nearby Middleton, Ohio," Feinsand writes, "and while free agents don't tend to base their decisions on a desire to return home, it's the one thing the Reds can offer that no other team can."

The Phillies won't be able to convince Schwarber to come back to Philadelphia in contract negotiations if this hometown distinction becomes integral to contract talks.

Dave Dobmrwoski and the front office can counteroffer with more money, more years, opt-outs, or other alterations to a contract. But, they can't contend with the Reds' hometown advantage in Schwarber's free agent negotiations.

If Schwarber puts more emphasis on going home, then the Phillies' chances of bringing him back will dwindle significantly.

They're still likely the favorite, as for now, this doesn't seem like the deciding factor for Schwarber in free agency this winter.

The Reds have to offer a realistic deal, and it remains to be seen if Cincinnati's leadership will sign off on such a deal, even if it means adding a player as talented as Schwarber.

But if the Reds are willing to match the Phillies' contract offers for Schwarber, then they would have a very realistic chance of prying the beloved designated hitter from Philadelphia this offseason.

This free agent rumor from Feinsand is one that Phillies fans and the front office have to consider with Schwarber this offseason. No decision has been made, nor is one close, but the Reds' hometown advantage could be the deciding factor in Schwarber's free agency.
