The Philadelphia Phillies are heading into one of the most important offseasons in recent franchise history. After another disappointing elimination in the NLDS, Dave Dombrowski needs to make some big changes.

Kyle Schwarber, JT Realmuto, Ranger Suarez, and Harrison Bader will draw a lot of attention, but the most important position to address is third base. Alec Bohm hasn't been good enough, and in the final year before free agency, now is the time to move on.

Jeff Passan of ESPN is urging the Phillies to finally part ways with Bohm after years of trade rumors. His replacement would be three-time All-Star, 31-year-old third baseman Alex Bregman.

Phillies urged to ditch Alec Bohm for Alex Bregman

"They need an impact bat for the middle of the lineup and an impact person to lead the next generation." Passan writes. "Considering the work he did in Boston this past season, one player checks all the boxes and offers precisely what the Phillies could use in every regard. Sign free agent third baseman Alex Bregman.

Moving on from Bohm is far from an abnormal decision. Before the 2025 season, Bohm had been floating in trade rumors. While nothing materialized, and he stuck on the roster through the season, those rumors are once again popping up.

Trading Bohm wouldn't be too challenging, as he'd be a one-year rental for an acquiring team, and one who could play third or first base at that.

For the Phillies, replacing Bohm with Bregman would be an ideal move. Their cleanup spot in the lineup has been a major area of concern, and Bregman would be a perfect fit in that spot.

A top four of Trea Turner, Kyle Schwarber (if the Phillies can re-sign him), Bryce Harper, and Bregman would be a championship-caliber lineup.

In 2025, for the Boston Red Sox, Bregman played in 114 games with a.273 batting average,.821 OPS, and 3.5 bWAR. Bohm, in 120 games for the Phillies, had a.287 average,.741 OPS, and 1.5 bWAR.

Making the switch from Bohm to Bregman would be, as Passan describes it, a "perfect" move to make this winter. Dombrowski could make a lot of moves this winter, and other than re-signing Schwarber and Realmuto, bringing in Bregman would be the best move.
