The MLB Rule 5 Draft is a chance for teams to fill out the edges of their 40-man roster with talent from other organizations that weren't selected to their original team's 40-man roster.

The Philadelphia Phillies saw one of their own former top prospects, Griff McGarry, get selected by the Washington Nationals third overall in the Rule 5 Draft. But, the Phillies didn't only lose in the Rule 5 Draft.

According to Todd Zolecki of MLB.com, the Phillies are swiping a player from a division rival as well, selecting right-hander Zach McCambley from the Miami Marlins to join the 40-man roster.

Phillies selected ex-Marlins righty in Rule 5 Draft

McCambley is a 6'2'' right-hander who was drafted by the Marlins in 2020 out of Coastal Carolina. He's 26 years old and has pitched in the Minors since 2021.

While McGarry, the player the Phillies lost, is a starter, McCambley is a reliever. But the new Phillies bullpen arm is coming off an intriguing season.

With the Double-A and Triple-A affiliates of the Marlins, McCambley had an impressive season. In Double-A, McCambley had a 2.11 ERA in 11 appearances, and in Triple-A, he had a 3.32 ERA in 36 appearances.

Overall, the new Phillies reliever had a 2.90 ERA in 47 appearances in 2025 for the Marlins in the minor leagues. Across 62 innings, McCambley had 83 strikeouts and 22 walks with three home runs allowed.

He had a solid year, and while the Marlins didn't select him to their 40-man roster, the Phillies are taking a chance on the former Coastal Carolina product.

It's a low-risk move, especially for a team looking to add as many reliever options as possible. With the chance that the Phillies trade some of their bullpen depth, McCambley could become a key member of the Phillies' bullpen come the 2026 season.
