After the news came out Tuesday that Kyle Schwarber took a new deal with the Philadelphia Phillies, it sounds like it had some level of impact around Major League Baseball for multiple teams.
With Pete Alonso now signing with the Baltimore Orioles, the New York Mets might be the team most affected by both decisions.
According to the latest from the New York Post’s Matt Ehalt, the Mets considered life without Alonso and also showed some level of interest in Schwarber.
This just goes to show that the Phillies might have ruined the Mets’ offseason plans, and that should always be viewed as a good thing.
“Schwarber drew interest from the Mets while they considered life without Alonso, The Post reported, while the Reds, Orioles, Red Sox and even the Pirates expressed a willingness to sign him, per ESPN.
“The Phillies made a late push, though, and they retained the 32-year-old lefty slugger,” he wrote.
It’s tough to say whether what the Mets are doing this offseason is the right approach.
It remains uncertain what’s really going on behind the scenes, but it almost feels like Steve Cohen doesn’t have as much money to operate with as many have assumed.
Still, the Phillies can’t worry about that too much.
They’ll continue doing what’s needed on both sides of the ball to give themselves the best chance to win every year.
