Alex Bregman is one of the top names in this free agency class, thanks to his veteranship and leadership. The 32-year-old infielder is looking for a team where he can successfully finish his MLB career. Bregman has officially opted out of his contract with the Boston Red Sox.

Alex Bregman has officially opted out of his contract with the Red Sox, per a report from Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe. Bregman will return to free agency, leaving the final two years and $80MM (including $40MM in deferred money) of the deal he signed with Boston last offseason on the table,” MLB Trade Rumors' Nick Deeds wrote.

Bregman is poised for a lucrative offseason, one that could land him on a World Series-contending roster.

“Both Alex Speier of The Boston Globe and Tyler Milliken of WEEI suggested Matt Chapman's contract as a comparison to what Bregman could get. The third baseman signed a bridge deal with the San Francisco Giants in 2024, posted a rebound season, then signed a six-year, $151 million extension,” BoSox Injection’s Katie Manganelli wrote.

Deadspin’s David Brown believes Bregman could very well end up with the Philadelphia Phillies.

“Word is that Bregman soon will opt out of his contract with the Red Sox, which should mean more free-agent bidders this time around because there won't be a qualifying-offer draft pick attached anymore. He turns 32 in March, still plays solid defense at third, again was one of the top 12-15% hitters in the league overall, and remains a clubhouse leader,” Brown wrote.

Adding Bregman would be a major boost for the Phillies. He brings a veteran presence, leadership, and the championship pedigree that could be the missing piece holding them back from a World Series.

Philadelphia has long been craving another title, and Bregman could be the catalyst to bring it back to the City of Brotherly Love.
