TL;DR

  • Philadelphia Phillies acquired outfielder Pedro Leon from Baltimore Orioles.
  • Leon, 27, from Cuba, previously played for Houston Astros organization.
  • He brings speed and defense, likely attending big league spring training.

The Philadelphia Phillies added some outfield depth on Friday.

With a packed MLB schedule anticipated due to the approaching non-tender deadline tonight, the Phillies seized the opportunity to acquire Pedro Leon from Baltimore Orioles.

Leon had been designated for assignment by the Orioles to make more room on their 40-man roster.

The Phillies' waiver claim on Friday was reported by insider Francys Romero.

Leon is a 27-year old outfielder from Cuba.

He first made his professional debut as a 23-year old in the Houston Astros' organization in 2021.

Leon remained with The Astros until the conclusion of the 2025 regular season. He was traded to the Orioles during the offseason, a move that was finalized before Baltimore promptly decided to part ways with him.

In 2024, he played for The Astros in Major League Baseball, appearing in seven games and batting 2-for-20 with two stolen bases.

Leon played in 22 of his 25 games in 2025 at Triple-A due to injuries. During his brief time in the Pacific Coast League, Leon posted a.734 OPS, stole five bases, and hit three home runs.

In the minor leagues, Leon has experience playing centerfield, right field and second base.

When he had his short cameo with the Astros in 2024, Leon only played centerfield.

The Phillies likely recognize Leon's potential for strong speed and defense. He'll probably attend big league spring training, where he'll need to make a good impression to secure a spot on the Opening Day roster.
