The Philadelphia Phillies had to make some roster space for a returner.

Last week, they reached agreement with catcher J.T. Realmuto on a three-year, $45 million deal to come back to Philadelphia.

And on Tuesday, the move became official and they needed to clear a spot on the 40-man roster.

They designated Weston Wilson for assignment to give Realmuto a spot.

Wilson will go on waivers. If he is unclaimed, he can remain with the Phillies.

Wilson is a 31-year old journeyman and utility infielder.

All 100 of his MLB games, spread over the past three seasons, have been played for the Phillies. He's a career.242 hitter with 11 doubles, nine homers and eight steals. He's got a solid.756 OPS in his 245 plate appearances at the big league level.

Wilson had his worst MLB stint so far in 2025, when he hit just.198.

He was originally a 17th-round pick by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2016 MLB Draft out of Clemson.

Wilson became a free agent after the 2022 season, having never reached the bigs with the Brewers.

The Phillies signed him in January 2023, and Wilson has played a role in the majors for each of the past three campaigns. If he clears waivers, he'll be off the 40-man roster, but he may still end up back on it at some point in the season ahead to get him back to help out the major league ballclub.
