The Philadelphia Phillies had a relatively good year this season, going 96-66, winning their division, and ultimately falling to the future MLB champs in the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLDS. Now, they’ll have some tough decisions to make this offseason regarding some of their superstars.
One of those stars is their All-Star ace Ranger Suarez. The Athletic’s Tim Britton projects that Suarez will be one of the players getting paid this offseason, with a six-year, $153 million contract.
“Every year I’ve done this, there’s one guy who stands out as a relatively unheralded player about to make a lot more than the casual fan expects. I think Suárez is about to join the likes of Brandon Nimmo and Willy Adames when he signs easily into nine figures…The deals for Gausman and Wheeler are arguably the two best signed for a starting pitcher in the last decade. And while Suárez generally misses some time during the season, no single injury has been catastrophic, and he’s always been healthy for October, where he’s pitched to a sparkling 1.48 ERA,” Britton wrote.
This season, Suarez posted a 12-8 record, a 3.20 ERA, 151 Ks, and a WHIP of 1.220 over 157 innings pitched. He was a solid No. 2 starter for the Phillies, and was clutch when it came to the playoffs as Britton mentioned.
Suarez seems like one of the Phillies that Philly needs to keep. He’s too valuable to the rotation, and the Phillies have plenty of hitters to keep them good offensively.
Hopefully, the Phillies realize that, and send an offer to Suarez immediately. Otherwise, another contender will swoop right in and take him from under their nose.
