Phillies get big Alec Bohm trade update after Bo Bichette's Mets decision image

The Philadelphia Phillies were dealt some brutal news on Friday afternoon, as they saw free-agent infielder Bo Bichette agree to a deal with the New York Mets.

Not only does seeing a division rival land a top player hurt, but considering the Phillies were strong suitors for Bichette, with a $200 million offer on the table, this news was terrible for the Phillies.

But this news didn't just cement that the Phillies missed out on Bichette. As Matt Gelb of The Athletic revealed, this Bichette-Mets deal has a big impact on Alec Bohm and his future in Philadelphia.

Phillies losing Bichette to Mets is big news for Bohm

"After Bichette's decision, the Phillies quickly reached agreement with J.T. Realmuto on a three-year, $45 million deal, league sources said," Gelb writes. "They could still shuffle their infield by trading third baseman Alec Bohm, but that is unlikely."

Bichette's decision to join the Mets was promptly followed by the Phillies bringing Realmuto back on a three-year, $45 million deal with a maximum value of $60 million.

While most fans were hoping for Bichette and some big changes to the infield and catcher spots in the wake of such a move, that's not coming to pass.

Instead, not only is Realmuto back, but Bohm isn't expected to be traded this winter. It's been multiple offseasons in a row that the Phillies have tried to trade Bohm, and yet, they've not been able to deal him.

This offseason seemed like the most likely time for Bohm to be dealt, as the Phillies' interest in Bichette would've made Bohm expendable.

But, with Bichette heading to the Mets, the Phillies are now likely to keep Bohm on the roster for the 2026 season as their third baseman.

He will be a free agent next offseason, and the Phillies will have to make a decision on whether to bring him back or let him walk.

Bohm is staying in Philadelphia despite the trade rumors recently, a further sign that the Phillies don't have an alternative plan to Bichette this offseason.
