The trip to Philadelphia initially looked like it could spell trouble for the Astros. The Phillies' bats roared to life in Game 3 and Houston went quiet in a 7-0 shutout defeat. But momentum took a drastic turn. Cristian Javier and the Houston bullpen pitched a combined no-hitter in Game 4 to even the series, and Justin Verlander picked up his first World Series victory as the Astros took Game 5 3-2 to collect their first lead of the series.
On the verge of a title, Dusty Baker will send Framber Valdez, who dominated the Phillies in Game 2, to the hill in Houston to try and end the World Series in six games, while Rob Thomson will counter with Zack Wheeler, who is looking for redemption after a Game 2 loss.

Valdez gave the Astros a lengthy start his last time out, pitching 6.1 innings and allowing only one run on four hits and three walks while striking out nine batters in Game 2 on Saturday. In that game, the Astro bats came out roaring in the first inning as they scored three runs in the bottom of the first and then added two more on an Alex Bregman homer in the fifth.
But the Phillies are expecting a bounceback from Wheeler. The runner-up to the NL Cy Young in 2021, Wheeler had a standout 2022 season as well, pitching to a 2.82 ERA in 153 innings. He has followed that up with a 2.67 ERA in five postseason starts spanning 30.1 innings of work.
