The Phillies appeared to have the Astros on the brink. Philadelphia's bats broke out in a big way in Game 3, pushing the club to a 2-1 World Series advantage with two more games to play in the raucous environment of Citizens Bank Park.

That environment quieted significantly Wednesday. Cristian Javier threw the first six innings of what proved to be a historic combined no-hitter as the Astros shut down the Phillies' bats and evened the series at two games apiece.

Now the pressure is on Philadelphia. Win, and the Phillies just have to split in Houston to win the title. Lose, and the Phillies have to sweep Games 6 and 7 to win it all.

And winning on Thursday will be easier said than done. The Phils will be going up against AL Cy Young favorite Justin Verlander, who will be looking to shake off his World Series woes and put the Astros a win away from their second title in six years.

Verlander cruised through the first three innings in Game 1, setting Philadelphia down in order his first time through the order. The second and third times through gave him fits. Over the next two innings, Verlander coughed up five runs on six hits and a pair of walks in an eventual a 6-5 Phillies win in 10 innings. While Verlander is a future Hall of Famer, his biggest blemish is that he has the most World Series losses (six) without a win.

Starting opposite Verlander will be Phillies midseason trade acquisition Noah Syndergaard, who has seen his role diminish amid his struggles with the club. He pitched to a 4.12 ERA in 10 games (nine starts) after the deadline. This postseason, he has appeared in three games — starting one — and pitched to a 1.69 ERA in 5 1/3 innings with four strikeouts, three hits and a walk. His last appearance came in Game 4 of the NLCS, when he pitched 1 1/3 innings of relief.
