Jhoan Duran trade details: Twins deal star closer to Phillies for prospects image

After faking out the media with warm embraces in the Minnesota bullpen, Twins reliever Jhoan Duran is now actually on the move.

On Wednesday, the 27-year-old reliever was sent to the Phillies in a deal that ends a seven-year tenure with the Twins organization. Duran was one of the most coveted relief arms on the trade market, as his name was atop the list of a few controllable relievers that could be had.

As the deal indicates, however, a player of his stature and contract situation does not come at a bargain.

Jhoan Duran trade details

Phillies receive:

  • RP Jhoan Duran

Twins receive:

  • C Eduardo Tait
  • SP Mick Abel

The Phils made a big splash on Wednesday, landing Duran, one of MLB's finest relievers in exchange for a pair of the franchise's most heralded prospects: catcher Eduardo Tait and starter Mitch Abel.

Tait was the No. 4 prospect in Philadelphia's farm system (No. 56 overall). The 18-year old has displayed a solid hit tool in his young career, regularly barreling balls across the field. His glove doesn't project to be quite as potent. But his strong arm should lessen the impact of potential fielding deficiencies.

Abel, meanwhile, earned No. 6 billing in the Phillies' farm (No. 92 overall). This stuff remains captivating as ever. Although his command has wavered at times, he's just two years removed from an appearance in MLB's Futures Game. Abel went 2-2 with a 5.04 ERA and 21 strikeouts in six starts with Philadelphia.

Duran posted a 2.01 ERA across 49.1 innings with Minnesota this season. In three of his four seasons, he's recorded an ERA under 3.

Jhoan Duran contract

Duran's contract runs through 2027.

Duran is earning $4.13 million in 2025, which is his first year of arbitration eligibility. The arbitration process should lead to salary increases for Duran in 2026 and 2027 based on his trajectory up to this point.
