The Guardians went into the All-Star break at .500 after making the ALDS last season, but they're anything but out of the playoff chase this year.
The American League Central has struggled mightily all season, which leaves the door wide open for four of the teams in the division to make the playoffs as Central champs. The division is unlikely to have a wild-card team.
For the Guardians, 2023 has been a tale of woe. Their hard-hit percentage is about the same as it was in 2022 this year, but the team's inability to score runs has bitten them. They were 27th in the league in runs per game through the All-Star break.
But the Guardians do pride themselves on playing unconventional baseball, so they were able to keep their record level in the first half despite a minus-7 run differential.
