Athletics agree to extension with Tyler Soderstrom after breakout season image

The Athletics made another strong move on Christmas day, agreeing to an extension with outfielder Tyler Soderstrom. The deal is worth $86 million over seven years according to MLB insider Jeff Passan.

Additionally, there is a club option for the 2033 season and escalators that could increase the deal by $45 million if met.

After trading for Jeff McNeil earlier in the week, the Athletics have made another move. While it was reported that the Athletics were eager to extend their young core, it remained to be seen whether or not a deal would come to fruition.

Last offseason, the A's were able to extend both Brent Rooker and Lawrence Butler. Now they've inked Soderstrom to a lucrative extension.

If last season's performance was any indication, it seems to be money well spent for the A's. After just 106 games played coming into his third season, Soderstrom broke out in 2025, posting 4.3 WAR. Additionally, Soderstrom racked up 60 extra base hits, including 25 home runs to go along with 93 RBI's and eight stolen bases.

Soderstrom also excelled in left field, earning a Gold Glove nomination in his first season at the position. Soderstrom previously played first base, but moved to the outfield after the arrival of Nick Kurtz.

Speaking of Kurtz, Athletics general manager David Forst will be eager to extend both Kurtz and Jacob Willson next. Those two exceeded all expectations last season, finishing top-two in Rookie of the Year award voting.

With the emergence of these young stars and the Athletics' commitment to them, A's fans have to be excited about the trajectory of the franchise as opposed to seasons past.
