Yankees trade rumor sets up to deal for star infielder after Alex Bregman signing image

The biggest hitter move of the offseason so far came Saturday night, when the Chicago Cubs signed Alex Bregman.

It could have a domino effect, because the Cubs now have Bregman, Matt Shaw and Nico Hoerner to potentially play just two positions, third base and second base.

Hoerner appears to be in trade rumors now, and the New York Yankees are said to have interest.

This is what Mets reporter Pat Ragazzo wrote on X on Sunday:

"Sources: Yankees reached out to the Cubs about infielder Nico Hoerner after the Alex Bregman signing and have legitimate interest."

It's not clear exactly how the Yankees would look to acquire Hoerner. They'd also need a plan for him.

If the Yankees went into the 2026 season as is, Jazz Chisholm would be the starting second baseman.

But maybe they'd view either Hoerner or Chisholm as a possible third base option, or maybe there'd be another move to follow.

It's certainly interesting to see this possibility out there.

It is fun each offseason to see how each move impacts the next move. The narrative continues on, one at a time, as the whole league tries to make sense of their rosters.

The Yankees and Cubs could have something in the works. We'll see.
