The Chicago Cubs were thrilled last offseason when they finalized a deal with the Houston Astros for right fielder Kyle Tucker. Tucker is one of the top players in the game and already has a World Series title to his name. Even as a potential one-year rental, the Cubs were ecstatic to bring Tucker in.
“We're excited that we were able to get it across the finish line,” Cubs general manager Carter Hawkins said. “We're thrilled. He's been an offensive machine over the last several years, and we're excited to be able to insert that into our lineup. That's a bat that fits into any lineup in the league.”
After a year in Chicago, Tucker didn’t share the same sentiment toward the Cubs once the season concluded.
“We'll see what happens. Don't know what the future is going to hold. If not, it's been an honor playing with all these guys and wish everyone best of luck whether it’s playing next year or not with them,” Tucker said.
Now, Tucker is the biggest name in free agency. Bleacher Report’s Tim Kelly believes the New York Yankees are poised to win the sweepstakes for him.
“The Yankees remain an interesting potential landing spot for Tucker, who seemingly would thrive playing 81 games a season at Yankee Stadium. He would likely have to shift to left field, with Aaron Judge in right field and the aforementioned Grisham hoping to rebound defensively in center field,” Kelly wrote.
The Yankees have multiple options for incorporating Tucker. He could move to left field, or Aaron Judge could shift to center field, where he has experience.
Tucker would add another power bat to the lineup, and with the short porches in Yankee Stadium, he would likely thrive. This would be a significant move for the Yankees, positioning them as strong contenders in the AL alongside their division rival, the Toronto Blue Jays.
