There's a very good chance that the New York Yankees could lose right-hander Devin Williams, who certainly didn't have the season he was hoping for in his first year in the Bronx.
The Yankees acquired Williams in a deal with the Milwaukee Brewers and hoped that he’d continue to be the best closer in baseball, as he posted an ERA below 1.95 in each of the three seasons prior to the Yankees acquiring him.
It wasn't that Williams was horrible throughout the 2025 season, as his stuff was still very good, showing that he still had some of the best off-speed stuff in baseball, but he also posted a 4.79 ERA and even lost his closer role for a lot of the year.
Nonetheless, the right-hander has proven for a long time now that he's elite, so at 31 years old, he should still be in for a decent payday from a contending team.
When predicting which team that might be, Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report recently predicted that the Yankees would lose him to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
“The Los Angeles Dodgers are sending a couple of pitchers to free agency. The team non-tendered reliever Evan Phillip and RHP Nick Frasso before Friday's 2 p.m. ET deadline...
“Devin Williams, who struggled with the New York Yankees this past season, could be a terrific target for L.A... It would seem that both the Dodgers and Williams agree with Reynolds, at least to some degree. The Athletic's Fabian Ardaya reported earlier this month that there was mutual interest between the two parties... Prediction: Williams signs with the Dodgers,” he wrote.
It might sound crazy to say, but because the Dodgers won the World Series again, their bullpen wasn't great in the 2025 season.
The expectation around baseball is for them to go out and add a free agent reliever, so Williams could be an option.
