With multiple players signing in free agency, it’s only fair to wonder when Cody Bellinger will decide on his next deal.
Bellinger is an elite player on both sides of the ball, and as the New York Yankees found out last season, they’re better with him on the roster than without him.
However, considering some of the recent contracts handed out, his price might now be higher than teams hoped.
Even so, Ryan Finkelstein of Just Baseball still had Bellinger coming in at a reasonable number, projecting him to return to the Yankees on a six-year, $150 million deal.
“The Cubs looked to cut bait with Bellinger after a lackluster 2024 season and essentially salary-dumped him to the Yankees. The gamble paid off big-time for the Yankees, as Bellinger turned in his best season since his MVP campaign back in 2019.
“Bellinger fit like a glove with the Yankees, hitting 29 home runs, driving in nearly 100, and posting a five-win season (5.0 bWAR, 4.9 fWAR). The Yankees have two outfielders hitting free agency, with Trent Grisham and Bellinger both hitting the market,” he wrote.
Two hundred million dollars seems like a more realistic scenario now after Kyle Schwarber and Pete Alonso’s deals, simply because of Bellinger’s defensive versatility.
However, six years and $150 million still feels fair.
If the Yankees were to keep him around at roughly $25 million AAV, most should view that as a win.
