Middle infielder George Lombard Jr. And outfielder Spencer Jones are the two most well-known names in the New York Yankees minor league system.
They rank as the Yankees' No. 1 and No. 4 prospects on MLB Pipeline, respectively, with Jones potentially fighting for a Major League roster spot during spring training.
Another prospect to keep an eye on: shortstop Dax Kilby, whom the Yankees selected 39th overall from Newnan High School in Georgia. Kilby, 19, hit.353 with 16 stolen bases in 18 games at Single-A Tampa.
"Basically, they got a stud," Josh Norris of Baseball America said about Kilby on a recent episode of the "Pinstripe Territory" podcast. "When this guy started playing in the Florida State League, I got texts from not one, not two, but three scouts from an outside organization not affiliated with the Yankees saying, 'Hey, you have him way too low on your list right now.'"
Kilby remains years away from an MLB debut
Kilby turned 19 in November, and his estimated arrival to MLB is 2029, according to his MLB Pipeline bio.
With 16 stolen bases and just one caught stealing, he's already shown he has the necessary speed to become a Major Leaguer. What about Kilby's bat?
"He hits the ball hard, and he hits the ball often," Norris added, saying he received more information about Kilby from a scout. "It's really as simple as that, and he's got a really strong ability not to swing and miss, and not chase."
Yankees fans are anxious for a change at shortstop due to the recent struggles of Anthony Volpe. Lombard and Kilby are not immediate solutions, but two players to keep an eye on over the next few years.
