The New York Yankees are trying to bring back free agent outfielder Cody Bellinger on a multi-year, $30 million deal this offseason.
While Bellinger is seeking out a $37 million AAV over seven years, the Yankees aren't planning to budge. This negotiation is not going to be resolved anytime soon, leaving the door open for a new team to pry Bellinger from the Yankees.
If that happens, what is the Yankees' "Plan B?" Well, according to Bob Klapisch of NJ.com, the backup plan for the Yankees is a very concerning one.
Their "Plan B?" The Yankees reportedly don't have one.
Yankees don't have 'Plan B' if Bellinger leaves
"It's a risky move. The Yankees don't appear to have a Plan B ready," Klapisch writes. "Outfielder Kyle Tucker is too expensive, and infielder Bo Bichette is almost certainly headed to the Phillies..."
This update from Klapisch is a very concerning one for Yankees fans. Brian Cashman and the front office have seemingly no backup plan if Bellinger departs in free agency.
Kyle Tucker is an option, but as Klapisch notes, he's too expensive for the Yankees. Bo Bichette, someone the Yankees have been linked to this offseason, is meeting with the Phillies are looks likely to join the NL East powerhouse.
MORE: No one is talking about this team as a sleeper in Cody Bellinger's free agency market
With contract talks coming to an impasse with Bellinger, and the Yankees' lack of backup plans, they might not be in good shape this winter to bring in a top free agent.
Spencer Jones and Jasson Dominguez could take over the last outfield spot, and the infield has the players necessary to field a full unit. But missing out on Bellinger and subsequently the rest of the top free agents would be a tough reality for fans to come to terms with.
Bellinger might not re-sign with the Yankees amid these tricky contract talks, and if that happens, the Yankees don't have a Plan B ready at the moment.
