Yankees' contract offer to Devin Williams before Mets $51 million deal revealed image

The New York Yankees are no strangers to losing their top free agents to the New York Mets, as last offseason, Juan Soto signed with the Mets on a massive deal after one year with the Yankees.

This offseason, another player who spent just one year with the Yankees departed for the Mets in free agency. Devin Williams signed a $51 million deal with the Mets, leaving the Yankees for the in-city rival.

But did the Yankees make an offer to Williams as they did for Soto? Bryan Hoch of MLB.com shared an explanation from Brian Cashman about the contract offer the Yankees made to Williams. Unlike Soto, however, that offer was nonexistent.

Yankees never made contract offer to Devin Williams

"Cashman said he never made Williams an offer before the reliever signed a three-year, $51 million deal with the Mets," Hoch reports.

Despite his first season with the Yankees not being an ideal one, with a 4.779 ERA in 67 games, his 0.00 ERA in four outings in the playoffs was proof that re-signing Williams could be on the table for the Yankees.

However, Cashman revealed the Yankees never made an offer to Williams, the 30-year-old reliever departed the Yankees for the Mets without any counteroffer or contract offer in general.

After his worst season in the Major Leagues, Williams signed a big $51 million deal over the next three years.

It's not a cheap contract for a reliever, but if Williams can get back to his All-Star form with the Milwaukee Brewers, then the Mets could have a great arm for the bullpen.

Adding relief pitching is a priority for the Yankees this winter, but their lack of offer for Williams points to the Yankees being more than okay with the seven-year MLB veteran leaving in free agency.
