The New York Yankees need starting pitching, and it’s something the front office has said they’re looking for.
There are elite starters, middle-of-the-rotation starters and some veteran starters who aren’t great. It remains uncertain where the Yankees will be on that front.
However, according to Chris Kirschner of The Athletic, the Yankees aren’t expected to pursue Framber Valdez, the Houston Astros' free agent.
“Their starting pitching options are dwindling. They do not plan to pursue Framber Valdez, Ranger Suárez or Zac Gallen, the three best remaining starters on the free-agent market. However, there are still a few players for the Yankees to consider,” he wrote.
On paper, Valdez would be a nice addition, but the Yankees also don’t need another left-hander in the rotation with Carlos Rodon and Max Fried when healthy.
Once the Yankees factor in the cost, as Valdez isn’t a short-term solution and won't sign a small deal, it makes even less sense.
Signing him would require a significant deal and a willingness to lock in a rotation spot long-term.
When the Yankees are healthy, they likely don’t even need another starter. However, adding more pitching is always a good thing, so there are a few ways to look at this.
With the other needs on the roster, paying Valdez would be strange.
