Reports have indicated that the New York Yankees have some level of interest in St. Louis Cardinals utility man Brendan Donovan.
Donovan probably isn’t the elite player many Yankees fans are hoping for, but there’s reason to believe he could be a very solid addition to the roster.
In some ways, he could be viewed as a player similar to one who does nothing at an elite level, but is very good at everything, and contending teams need players like that.
Whether the Yankees ultimately trade for him remains to be seen, but according to Jim Bowden of The Athletic, there’s reason to believe the Cardinals will move on from Donovan this winter.
"The Cardinals will move Brendan Donovan, the Giants will listen on Bryce Eldridge, the Padres are shopping Jake Cronenworth and Nick Pivetta, the Astros are trying to move Christian Walker and Jake Meyers, the Royals will move a starter for a power-hitting left fielder and the Red Sox will trade Jarren Duran if they get the right corner infielder or starting pitcher," Bowden wrote.
Donovan shouldn’t be overly expensive in a trade package, which may be part of the reason the Yankees are interested.
He won’t be cheap by any means, but there are players who would cost far more while offering a similar, or even lesser, impact.
