There had been some small rumors that the New York Yankees could move on from players to lower their payroll.
Whether it's allowing free agents to walk, not signing others in free agency, or other avenues, it wouldn't be the craziest idea for New York to go that way.
As long as the Yankees put together a competent roster that has a chance to win a World Series, saving a few million dollars shouldn't be the end of the world.
And according to the latest from Hal Steinbrenner, the Yankees owner, it doesn't sound like lowering the payroll will be too big of a problem.
Steinbrenner stated that his biggest concern is putting the best roster on the field every single day, so if there's a certain player out there that they want who they believe could help them win a World Series, there's not much else to talk about.
"Would it be ideal if I went down [with the payroll]? Of course," Steinbrenner said, per Jorge Castillo of ESPN. "But does that mean that’s going to happen? Of course not. We want to field a team we know can win a championship, or we believe could win a championship. It all depends on what’s out there and what the possibilities are and how much I feel we’re able or we need to pull the trigger on those possibilities.”
Steinbrenner also spoke a good bit about the revenue situation with the Yankees, although that wasn't the focus of his comments.
Regardless of what happens over the next few months, it almost feels safe to say that once again, the Yankees are going to be going for it all.
While they haven't won in quite some time by their standards, it's impressive that the front office and ownership continue to do what it takes to at least try to win.
