The New York Yankees’ payroll has been one of the hottest topics of the offseason, with many questioning whether Hal Steinbrenner and the rest of the front office will allocate the necessary funds to land top free agents.
Speaking specifically about Cody Bellinger, who has to feel pretty good right now after some players landed massive deals, including Pete Alonso and Kyle Schwarber, it doesn’t sound like he’ll have a hard time getting the contract he wants.
And according to his agent Scott Boras, it doesn’t seem likely that the Yankees will be the team shying away from that type of money.
Boras addressed speculation about the Yankees cutting payroll, and according to Chris Kirschner of The Athletic, he hasn’t heard anything that suggests a reduced budget.
"They've never made mention of that," Boras said, per Kirschner. "I go back with what they did with Soto last year. Hal, Randy and Cash did everything they could possibly do to pursue a great talent. I have no reason that they wouldn't approach this market any different than that."
That could simply be Boras keeping his client’s value high. If he indicated the Yankees were out, other teams might adjust their offers, but it's still an interesting comment nonetheless.
With the Yankees having questions in their lineup, it’s tough to say it wouldn’t make sense to re-sign Bellinger, unless they have a different plan in mind.
