The New York Yankees' rotation could be thin to start the 2026 season. Unless they make some moves this offseason, they will begin the year with Max Fried, Cam Schlittler, Luis Gil, Will Warren, and Ryan Yarbrough.
The Yankees' rumored interest in a former National League Cy Young Award winner was to help replace Gerrit Cole, who will start the season on the injured list, rehabbing from Tommy John Surgery.
Carlos Rodon and Clarke Schmidt will also start the year on the injured list, with Rodon's return expected well before Schmidt's. Would Sandy Alcantara from the Miami Marlins help make this rotation the best in baseball?
It appears the price tag to acquire Alcantara is remarkably high.
Marlins want to keep Alcantara
According to a report from Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, the Marlins prefer to keep Alcantara next season.
"Marlins will listen on [Edward] Cabrera, but 2 suitors (Houston, Baltimore) are no longer involved, and Marlins don't want to sell short on him," Jackson wrote on X. "They want to keep Alcantara (would have to take an incredible offer to even consider a deal), per source."
The Yankees could offer the Marlins an "incredible" trade package for Alcantara, such as Jasson Dominguez and one of their top pitching prospects, like Carlos Lagrange, but a deal like that comes with risk.
Alcantara had a career-worst 5.36 ERA in 31 starts last season, allowing six or more earned runs in six outings. He underwent Tommy John Surgery in October 2023 and missed the entire 2024 season.
