Reports have indicated that the New York Yankees could be interested in bringing back Devin Williams, and it makes plenty of sense from their perspective. While Williams should still get a decent payday, he had a rather tough year in 2025, and it could drive down his market value.
If the Yankees could land Williams on a cheaper deal, it’d make even more sense to go out and land him.
According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, Williams is receiving interest around the league, but he's also spoken with the Yankees about a potential reunion.
“The Yankees and the camp for free agent late-inning reliever Devin Williams recently discussed the potential for a possible reunion, league sources said...
“It’s unclear how likely a reunion is with Williams, 31. In the closer market, Williams resides behind Edwin Díaz, likely in a tier with Robert Suarez. The Los Angeles Dodgers, Cincinnati Reds, Boston Red Sox and New York Mets are among the teams that have been connected to Williams so far this offseason,” he wrote.
Why keeping Devin Williams would be a smart decision for Yankees
Looking back at what Williams has done throughout his career, there was a strong argument to be made that not only was he the best closer in baseball at the time, but there was a strong argument that he was going to go down as one of the best ever.
From 2021 to 2024, there wasn't a better closer in the game, evident by his 1.89 ERA and striking out 308 hitters in just 195.0 innings.
Fast forward to 2025 with his 4.79 ERA, there's a lot to be desired with Williams, but the risk is worth it if the price isn't too high.
