Making a trade with the Miami Marlins for left-hander Ryan Weathers was the New York Yankees' first significant move of the offseason.
New York's fanbase remains confused as to why general manager Brian Cashman and the front office are not being more aggressive to improve the roster. Meanwhile, the other four clubs in the AL East have already made several moves in preparation for the 2026 season.
The Yankees' arch rivals, the Boston Red Sox, signed lefty Ranger Suarez to a five-year, $130 million contract on Wednesday, USA Today's Bob Nightengale reported on X. Suarez was one of the top free agent starters available and substantially upgrades Boston's rotation alongside Garrett Crochet and Sonny Gray.

What Suarez's new deal with the Red Sox means for the Yankees
With Suarez in the rotation, the head-to-head series against the Red Sox is only going to get tougher for the Yankees.
New York finished with a 4-9 record during the regular season against Boston in 2025, losing all four times they faced Crochet.
Additionally, Cashman has expressed a desire to add more right-handed hitters, feeling the Yankees are too left-handed at the plate. Suarez held lefties to a.221 batting average and.611 OPS in 122 at-bats last year.
Now, Cashman could feel the pressure to make a big splash as a way to respond to Suarez's new deal. The Yankees reportedly remain in the trade market for another starter after last night's move for Weathers.
