The New York Yankees may have another obstacle standing between them and Brendan Donovan, and this one could be the worst outcome.
According to CBS Sports’ Mike Axisa, the Boston Red Sox are also in the mix as they continue searching for another impact bat. While it might depend on what Boston does with Alex Bregman, it’s something to monitor.
“The Red Sox continue to pursue another bat for the infield even after trading for Willson Contreras, according to the Boston Globe. Among their targets are Cardinals super utility man Brendan Donovan, Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte, Astros third baseman Isaac Paredes, and free agents Bo Bichette and Alex Bregman. Bregman spent 2025 with Boston,” he wrote.
If the Red Sox are serious, it could force the Yankees to give up more than what they want.
While adding Donovan makes sense, similar to the Red Sox and Bregman, this could signal the Yankees moving Jazz Chisholm or Ryan McMahon to land him, even if it’s in a different deal.
As I’ve said, Donovan doesn’t make or break an offseason, but if he landed in Boston, it wouldn’t be ideal.
The Yankees have a lot of competition here and that’s what this will likely come down to. If they want him, they can get him. If the price is too high, letting him walk makes sense.
