The Paul Skenes and New York Yankees stuff is likely a nothing burger at this point, but it's also fair to mention that sometimes, when teammates come out and make these comments, things happen.
The reality is, however, the Yankees don't have a realistic path to add Skenes for multiple reasons.
It doesn't seem like he wants to be with the Yankees, and the Pirates also have no reason to move on from him right now. Skenes doesn't hit the free agency market until 2030, so New York would have to give up a package that’s never been seen before in Major League Baseball, and it likely doesn't even have that.
According to the latest from Robert Murray, an MLB insider over at FanSided, it sounds like it was all a lie. He reported that he doesn't expect him to leave anytime soon, and another person stated that it was a joke.
“What I believe: Time to forget this rumor and move on,” he wrote.
Skenes wants to win with Pirates
This comes after Skenes stated that he wants to play for the Pirates moving forward. His goal right now is to take that organization from one of the worst in baseball to one of the best, and with the talent he has on the mound, it’s certainly possible if the Pirates make the necessary moves.
“I’m on the Pirates. My goal is to win with the Pirates. … The way that fans see us outside of Pittsburgh, we’re not supposed to win. There are 29 fan bases that expect us to lose. I want to be a part of the 26 guys that change that.”
