The New York Yankees are far from the only team interested in Brendan Donovan. He seemed like an obvious trade target, and still is, but other teams are interested and might be willing to give up more than New York.
According to CBS Sports’ Mike Axisa, the Seattle Mariners are a real threat in the Donovan sweepstakes, and they’re willing to move top prospects. After losing Jorge Polanco in free agency to the New York Mets, second base has become an area of need.
“The Mariners are willing to trade some of their best prospects for Cardinals super utility man Brendan Donovan, including switch-pitcher Jurrangelo Cijntje, reports the Seattle Times. Seattle is looking to add a second baseman after losing Jorge Polanco to free agency, and they're aiming high. They've been connected to D-backs star Ketel Marte in addition to Donovan,” he wrote.
That willingness to part with top-end prospects is what changes things for the Yankees.
Donovan would be perfect in New York. He’s a decent left-handed bat, offers versatility and does a lot of the little things.
However, if Seattle is putting top prospects on the table, the Yankees may have to decide whether Donovan is worth doing the same for.
